I think John Boy is referring to a lack of information in your post. For example: why was it necessary to shutdown via power button? What error messages(s) did you receive? What do you mean computer will not start? - nothing on the screen, no power lights and so forth? Did you try safe mode?

KDS you need to detail your questions as AJR says and when I saw that one of the main differentials I had besides why you would need to hard button shut down is:
1) Are you hanging on shutdown--common can help with that. 2) Can you not boot--common can help with that. 3) Random shutdowns--common yada yada.
There's plenty of willing help here, but it makes it much harder if we have to guess and right now that's running 50% of the posts in this particular group. So to get faster fixing tell us in detail what you are seeing--remembering we aren't sitting at your monitor and then someone can help.
You also need only one thread per problem--more information on your problem not more posts with no info is what will get you answers to get fixed.
